Bars are aplenty all over Kuala Lumpur but bars specialising in whisky, not so much. However, that scarcity only adds to the excitement when a new one is discovered.
From our constant lookout for a new place to sit back and sip a glass of blended malt, we've found 5 bars for varying types of whisky drinker, whether you're the stiff on-the-rocks sort, or someone who's up for new ways to enjoy the drink.
For the old-school whisky appreciator: The Whisky Bar
This whisky-drinker's staple in Changkat, Bukit Bintang, wasn't kidding when it named itself The Whisky Bar. It carries easily over a hundred labels of whisky and on the decor end, you'll find plush armchairs and rich wooden furniture matching one's ideal of a place to enjoy the best whiskies. Cigars are also on hand to complete the experience. Let's just say you'll be hard to find something other than whisky here; even their cocktail selection only carries those made with -- you guessed it -- whisky.
For the adventurous whisky drinker: 44 Bar @ The Row
Selling itself as a pop-up bar says all there needs to be said about the fun, inventive nature of this drinking hole with an equally playful name. Nestled comfortably in one of the shoplots at The Row along Jalan Doraisamy, it spills over with fun, contemporary elements, an aspect that is also reflected in its drinks menu that, incidentally, specialises in exclusive American craft spirits from artisanal distilleries. You'll find corn whisky (aka moonshine) as well as rye and bourbon whisky alongside your regular Scotch.
For Japanese whiskies: Torii
Japanese whiskies are the new popular kids in the world of whisky and one place to properly get a good sampling is Torii, a Japanese-accented gastro-bar, dedicated to Japanese whiskies. Torii is home to the widest selection of Japanese whisky around town so if you're on the mission to find the best one, your chances are highest here. It doesn't hurt either that it'll always have delicious yakitori at hand to line the stomach.
More Japanese whiskies: The Bar Kinugawa
If you can't get enough of Japanese whiskies, another place to try is The Bar Kinugawa at Empire Damansara. The place is decorated with unmistakably Japanese accents so you'll even feel like you're in Japan while sipping away at your Japanese whiskies. It occasionally has guest Japanese bartenders over too, mixing up innovative cocktails you won't find anywhere else.
For whisky, wine, seafood and more: Eau de Vie
If it's only you on a whisky hunt and your buds are in the mood for something else, we have the perfect solution. Eau De Vie at Nexus Bangsar South, being a restaurant (with amazing tapas, may we add) and liquor store that stocks a variety of wine and spirits (with quite a devoted section of whiskies, thank you very much!) will have something for everybody, making it the perfect compromise. Delicious food, fun cocktails, relaxed environment and, above all, a decent whisky list make for good reasons to pay this place a visit.
