Tenmanya’s menu offers a good mix of traditional Japanese favourites as well as selections with a modern twist. The Chef’s signature dish menu is a smogarsbord of influences; think chilli padi served with salmon carpaccio and grilled lamb rack with ginger sauce.
A must-try here is its sashimi moriawase; thick generous slices of ingredients such as salmon, yellowtail, sashimi and scallop are usually served depending on availability. The tuna at Tenmaya is particularly commendable in quality and freshness; its lean texture is stripped of fat without losing its signature texture.
Adventurous diners will love the creative spin the restaurant’s chef has done with its chawan mushi selections; think rich foie gras and soupy shark’s fin steamed with egg for a luxurious appetiser.
For mains, the restaurant’s signature grilled cod with sweet miso marinade is done superbly; the fish’s skin is crispy while still retaining the juicy texture of the flesh. The sweet miso marinade that goes with the cod is best eaten with a bowl of rice lest it becomes too strong for the palate.
While its dessert menu is small, its selections are satisfying. A good choice would be its Japanese ice cream; the white sesame ice cream is grittier in flavour in comparison to the usual black sesame ice cream found in most Japanese restaurants, although the latter is available at Tenmanya as well. Lovers of muar chee will be delighted to know that a variation of this local dish is available here as a dessert as well.
While its uniform is casual befitting its level of dining, there is no lacking in attentiveness in the service here. A right balance between warm friendliness and cool professionalism is achieved by most of the service brigade.
Perhaps due to its position as a newbie in the dining scene, Tenmaya’s pricing is reasonable and meant to attract diners into its space.
The chef’s signature dishes menu range from RM18 to RM42 per serving and its to-go dishes such as rice and noodles are priced affordably to cater to the office crowd in its vicinity.
