Prego proffers warmth and pleasure, with an expansive length that allows diners to select to their preferred table either strategically facing the restaurant entrance by the wine bar, or further in by the windows overlooking the bustling city streets. Seating is cosy and tables stretch to the outdoors.
For a restaurant that serves food made from scratch, dishes are promptly made and delivered to the table.
To begin, dive into the lavish antipasto misto Prego, a platter of assorted cheeses and cold meats that are profusely fresh and tantalising. Worthy of mention are the flavourful beef bresaola and truffle-scented ricotta cheese rolls, and sweet and springy prawns with salad, and aromatic chilli mussels.
Next, dig into the cheesy goodness of the carbonara e castelmagno, piping hot fettuccine pasta studded with beef bacon, coated in egg yolk, cream and parmesan, tossed in a block of castelmagno cheese. The cheeses and cream are a right balance, and the beef bacon adds a much-needed smokey element.
Continue with the stinco d’agnello cotto a fuoco lento con polenta e parmigiano, or slow cooked lamb shank with soft parmesan polenta. Succulent lamb chunks fall off the bone in a nudge, bathed in a sticky and sweet balsamic vinegar and onion glaze and paired with a comforting creamy polenta and crunchy stalks of asparagus.
An order of astice d bufala pizza, topped with tomato sauce, slices of mozzarella, lobster, more fresh buffalo mozzarella and a sweep of truffle oil, is enjoyable to say the least.
End the meal with a tiramisu of an interesting taste profile – fluffy layers of mascarpone trifle, and espresso and brandy soaked sponge, topped with a layer of cocoa and cinnamon powder and a sprinkle of icing powder. Light yet robust, this is an unforgettable dessert.
Meals that consist of a good mix of seafood, meat and cheese, would do well with the red French Chianti wine and a white French Chardonnay wine. The Chianti is a glass of ruby red easy with a mellow aftertaste, while the white Chardonnay is a fruity and pleasantly mellow accompaniment to the pasta and as a palate cleanser. Wines range extensively by both glass and bottles covering the offerings from major regions, including prosecco and a list of champagnes. There is also a wide range of Prego-inspired cocktails and liquors. Wait staff are more than happy to oblige for dish pairing recommendations.
Servers are thoughtful to check on guests’ preferred sequence of dishes. Wait staff offer basic courtesies, answer questions about food, and most are very attentive to the needs of guests.
Portions are hearty and are best shared. The profusion of flavours in each meal that’s carefully thought out and plated temptingly is amazing. Their four-course lunch sets are best for a full experience of their menu that caters to different dietary requirements and taste buds. Above all, the famous weekend Bubbalicious Champagne Brunch is a must for stellar Italian offerings and free-flow champagne.
